We are glad to welcome you to the first newsletter of the
INSPIRATION coordination and support action. Funded by the
European Horizon2020 programme, we aim at establishing a funder
and end-user demand-driven Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for
land use, land-use changes and soil management in Europe. With
more than 20 partners from 17 countries, our objectives are to
(1) formulate, consult on and revise an end-user oriented SRA;
(2) scope out models of implementing this SRA; and (3) prepare
a network of public and private funding institutions willing to
commonly fund the execution of the SRA. Our mission is to
improve the supply and effectiveness of science/knowledge
take-up by those who really need it in order to address
national and European societal challenges related to land
management and the soil, sediment, water system. In this
endeavor, we apply a systematic bottom-up and stakeholder
engagement approach. Learn more about INSPIRATION and your
options to become involved in this newsletter and on the
project’s website:

Maria Krautzberger, the President of the German Environment
Agency, gave a key note at the INSPIRATION kick off meeting
in Berlin.
She emphasised how important it is to create synergies and
networks among different stakeholder groups dealing with soil
and land use issues and appreciated that the European
Commission has taken the initiative to tackle this important
task. According to the President the INSPIRATION project is
also one milestone within the German Environment Agency’s
activities to use the “Year of the Soils 2015” – proclaimed by
the United Nations – as a platform for raising awareness on the
importance of sustainable soil and land management.

Why INSPIRATION is of importance for stakeholders
INSPIRATION will develop links with the existing
multi-stakeholder networks (including policy-makers) at
European and International levels. Thus regularly, we
will give opportunity to stakeholders to explain why
the themes developed in INSPIRATION are of importance
for them in the light of their own challenges.
