Basic information established for European
Strategic Research Agenda on soil,
land-use and land management

The report that concludes the first year’s activities of the INSPIRATION project is now available. The report contains a review and syntheses of information on research demands on soil, land-use and land management as well as on science-policy-interface and funding options. This information is obtained for more than 17 European states and was collated via a truly bottom-up, participatory process, engaging in total 374 stakeholders in interviews (see figure) and 468 in workshops. The information will now be synthesized to define a shared European Strategic Research Agenda as well as options for its funding and execution. The report is publicly available via the INSPIRATION website.

CoreGroup Meeting in Berlin

The INSPIRATION Core Group – which is basically the management board of the consortium consisting of the Work Package and Theme Leaders – met in Berlin in mid-March to review the current project progress and to plan the next steps. Amongst others, the focus was put on the organization of the up-coming annual meeting and stakeholder event at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal in June 2016. Here, next to the consortium partners from 17 countries, more than 60 key stakeholders and the IAB will join.

INSPIRATION Conceptual Model

In order to structure the diverse topics of importance for a Strategic Research Agenda for soil, land-use changes and land management in Europe, INSPIRATION uses a Conceptual Model. It identifies four perspectives under which cross-country and trans-sectoral research needs will be identified from the collated information on national knowledge gaps. INSPIRATION's Conceptual Model (see figure) expresses the view that sustainable land management must balance the demand of ressources for societal use with what nature offers as natural capital. Therefore, these two perspectives are important lenses to identify common research areas. However, actual decisions take place in practice considering available rules, information and support tools - the land management perspective is investigating how to support more efficient choices. As a fourth perspective, regional, European and global impacts of the decision making are investigated.
