INSPIRATION enters its final year
Our efforts over the first year to understand national research
priorities and funding options have been brought together under
the four integrating themes of Resource Supply (Ecosystem
Services & Natural Capital), Resource Demand, Land Use
Management and Net Impact (at local, regional, national and
global scale). A series of clustered thematic topics (CTT) and
integrated research themes (IRT) has been identified. Over the
last few months the identified research needs have been refined
and prioritized in an iterative bottom-up process with more
than 500 European experts from 20 countries. In a recent step,
the scope of the INSPIRATION Strategic Research Agenda (SRA)
has been discussed with our ambassadors in each of the
INSPIRATION partner countries (our national focal points or
NFPs) and members of our international advisory board (IAB).
The SRA will provide a framework highlighting areas where
developing, transferring and applying knowledge is needed to
tackle societal challenges related to the soil-sediment-water
system to support a resource efficient and low carbon economy
in Europe.
The next few months will be dedicated to finalizing the SRA and
to developing the process of bringing together funders (match
making) with shared interests in delivering parts of the SRA
together.
The SRA will help funders prioritise their investments to
ensure impact is delivered at the most relevant time over the
coming decade or so. It will clearly identify what new
knowledge is required or what transfer or take up of existing
knowledge is needed. It will also highlight areas where ongoing
monitoring is demanded.
Our evidence shows that much scientific progress has taken
place over recent decades but that this science has not been
applied as widely as needed to achieve the step change in
resource demand or land use management needed to contribute to
a sustainable Europe. Human factors often militate against
changing practices and behaviours at the individual or societal
level and research will be needed to discern how best to
stimulate such changes to keep Europe at the forefront of
resolving contemporary societal challenges.

Christine King, ANR and Sylvain Mahé, Christelle Marlin and Gilles Rayé, French Ministries
interview on ANR-INSPIRATION workshop
The French National Research Agency (ANR) and the Horizon 2020 coordination and support action INSPIRATION, under the auspices of the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, have organised a symposium on the assessment of ANR projects, which took place 16-17 January 2017 in Paris. Participants also exchanged about emerging research questions at European level emerging from INSPIRATION. Our interview presents the feedback on this event from ANR and the Ministries of Agriculture and Research.

Announcement: Policy Oriented Workshop
A second Policy-Oriented Workshop will take place in
Brussels on 4 July 2017. The workshop, entitled
“Towards a common vision for strategic soil & land
management research and knowledge transfer in Europe”,
will bring together European key players from policy
and research related to issues of soil and land
management. The main objective is to discuss the
implementation of the INSPIRATION Strategic Research
Agenda (SRA) on soil and land management.

INSPIRATION special session at AquaConSoil 2017
INSPIRATION will host a special session at this year’s
AquaConSoil in Lyon, France. Save the date and join us
on Thursday 29 June 2017. We look forward to presenting
our SRA and discuss shared national and European
research priorities and to scope out models for
implementing the SRA.

Interactions with Networks
Engagements with key networks for the development of
the INSPIRATION SRA have been initiated by organising
meetings with representatives of the networks and by
several INSPIRATION participations to network events.
This engagement has been dedicated to identify the best
way to interact with the networks and to inform them
about INSPIRATION. For example, INSPIRATION was present
at events organised by JPI Water, MAES Soil Pilot and
the Landmark project’s stakeholder workshop. Also
NICOLE, SedNet, EEA and Common Forum provided us
opportunities to present INSPIRATION during their
events.

EU-China: Soil policy, science and technology workshop, Beijing, 27-28 February 2017
The INSPIRATION Core Group member Paul Nathanail,
University of Nottingham, was part of an EU delegation
to China in February to share experiences in soil
management. Paul was able to share the emerging
priorities from INSPIRATION with colleagues from the
Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection and the
Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences.

INSPIRATION passes successfully the review of the first reporting period
We are glad to have received a positive feedback on the
project achievements in the first 18 months. Our EC
Scientific Project Officer and two peer reviewers have
evaluated the first implementation period. They all
agree that our project “is being so far implemented in
a very good way” – congratulating us for some very
encouraging initial results. The INSPIRATION Core Group
has carefully considered the few requested comments
from the expert review and thanks in particular all
European stakeholders and experts who have contributed
to our work so far.

INSPIRATION article in Trasporti & Cultura
Matteo Tabasso from SiTI (Italian partner of
INSPIRATION) edited volume 45 of the review
Trasporti & Cultura, which was dedicated to
peripheries. It included a summary of INSPIRATION
(p. 2) and an article entitled “INSPIRATION, a
European Research Project on Land Use” (p. 121).
