INSPIRATION Final Conference
Starting New Collaborations

World Soil Day 2017 is a very special day for the INSPIRATION community. We are delighted to be holding our final conference as a H2020 funded Coordination and Support Action on World Soil Day and to be hosting friends and partners from all over Europe and beyond.  In collaboration with the European Commission’s DG Research & Innovation and DG Environment, we are using World Soil Day to hold a discussion about “Land, Soils and Science”. We will present our strategic research agenda on spatial planning, land use and soil management and review the state-of-the-art in European science and learn about what research and innovation is needed from the perspectives of policy makers, end-users of research and scientists.

This formal final event is also a starting point for a new collaboration phase. INSPIRATION partners will continue in their efforts to link European funders interested in co-funding research collaboration on soil and land. There are challenges to do this regarding resources and adequate means, which will differ among funders and between topics. Nevertheless, INSPIRATION will ensure knowledge demands to address societal challenges can be met by helping funders with diverse backgrounds from across Europe find like-minded partners. Being launched at the conference, the www.inspiration-agenda.eu platform will collate funding interests and facilitate match making. We encourage all interested in co-funding soil and land use related research to contact us for details.

On behalf of the INSPIRATION coordination team and Core Group, I thank all our partners and friends, not least our supportive International Advisory Board and its chair Annette Gatchett of the US EPA, for joining us on this mission. More than 500 engaged experts, more than 20 countries involved, dozens of workshops, hundreds of interviews integrated in one Strategic Research Agenda and the commitment of 18 institutions to continue the facilitation of collaborative funding. I am looking forward to continued partnership and seeing inspired research projects on the horizon.

Match-making phase
Match-making phase

Paul Nathanail has presented our strategic research agenda (the INSPIRATION SRA) to delegates at several events. The delegates at the ICCL meeting in Copenhagen and SiteRem conference in Beijing came from countries around the world, many of which are facing similar societal challenges as those our SRA is trying to address. Contributing to the European Commission’s European Week of Regions and Cities events brought our SRA to the attention of a wide range of stakeholders across Europe many of whom would not have appreciated the role soil and water play in urban land management. Paul Nathanail highlighting the role the INSPIRATION SRA has in contributing to delivering the UN SDGs.

INSPIRATION was delighted to contribute to this year’s AquaConSoil conference in Lyon. The coordinator Stephan Bartke introduced the project as part of the opening session panel discussion. A special session “Linking Europeans’ Strategic Research Agenda on Spatial Planning and Land Use Management with AquaConSoil themes” attracted circa 50 delegates. The session highlighted research topics of the INSPIRATION research agenda related to the conference themes. The importance and specific research needs of delegates were discussed in an interactive World Café format. The presentation and some results of the session are documented online.

24 delegates from several European Commission Directorate Generals, national funding agencies, Joint Programming initiatives and other stakeholders participated in our second Policy Oriented Workshop in Brussels on 4th July 2017. The participants broadly welcomed the INSPIRATION project and valued in particular the bottom-up approach to inform research community about societal demand knowledge. The second phase of the event focused on a first match-making of interests for specific research topics of the INSPIRATION SRA.
